Sunil Das enjoys a strong position among the front ranking painters of India. His eternally favourite bull and horse play a very important role in his paintings and were instrumental in his rise to prominence. An indefatigable painter, Das has jumped from one style to another easily in the past four decades, be it the bulls, the horses, the binodhini series, but each of them was marked with supreme skill and a sense of integrity which characterise the artist.

His paintings have a kind of structure and rigidity that one would typically find in sculpture and in the etchings of graphic art. One of India’s important post-modernist painters, Sunil Das rose to prominence with his drawing of horses. About 60 years of age, he can look back at his nine to ten phases of paintings, all of them marked by supreme skill and a sense of integrity.
