Jagdish Chander’s works highlight a statement that he repeats often- My struggle and ambitions have been for aesthetic and artistic integrity rather then personal fame. Trained at Delhi College of Art (1977), Jagdish Chander has been awarded the Sanskriti Award (1988), the Sahitya Kala Award (1988) and the National Award (1990) along with a scholarship to the University of Tsucuba, Japan (1984) in critical recognition of his work. The obsession with the figure reflects an outlook which places humankind at the center of the universe. In the past couple of years, Chander has been concerned with the portrayal of pure emotion. For this he employs the most direct form, the human face. Chanders art reflects a desire to restore a balance between thought and feeling. In the paintings in this exhibition, conflicting feelings emerge readable as anxiety, rage, despair, numbness, frustrated attempts to be heroic, and fragmented efforts to maintain at least some kind of recognizable human dignity amidst the pressures of the day to day.
